Help...painting exterior wood siding?

I want to paint the wood siding on my house so that I dont have to oil or stain it every other year. We have lived here 9 years, and I'm tired of it. Can you paint over wood siding that has been stained and/or oiled over the years, and if so, how? And what type of paint is best? Also do you need to use alot of primer first? Thanks everyone.

Answers:

1Yes, of course you can. The key to any good paint job is in your preparation. You have to scrape and sand off all the loose finish that is on your siding, and you must rough up any portion of the siding that has finish on it that will not come off through regular scraping and sanding. Paint will not stay on a surface that has not been prepped in this manner. It will also benefit you to use a good quality primer before you apply you finish coats. One coat of primer and a minimum of two coats of paint and you ought to be good for 15 to 20 years with only minor touch ups. I recommend Benjamin Moore.
